Artist of the Week - Issue 6

ARTISTS OF THE WEEK

These students are being recognized for their active contributions and positive participation to the arts at KES as they demonstrate talent, dedication, and creativity in the arts while also upholding the school values of dignity, integrity, kindness, and respect. Students are chosen by the KES Arts Department for their efforts and to showcase their art form.

This week we are celebrating:
Charlie '27, Brynn '33, Willoughby '29, Charlotte '27, and Harlo '28!

Charlie '27
Charlie continues to grow as a performer and has begun the year ready to take on new challenges. As one of the leads in Freaky Friday, she has clearly put significant time into preparing independently, and she consistently arrives at rehearsal knowing her material and ready to build on it. Audiences have lots to look forward to when she takes the stage this November!
Charlie has also become a familiar presence in music at KES. She did a wonderful job helping to lead the Terry Fox Day performance this fall, following her beautiful performance of “O Canada” at last June’s Closing Ceremonies. In music class, she is engaged, enthusiastic, and always willing to participate. It has been wonderful to see Charlie continue to develop her talents and contribute so enthusiastically to the Arts at KES.

Brynn '33
New to the School, but already making a positive impact, is Brynn. During the September Junior School trips, Brynn displayed inclusion and kindness when patiently teaching a peer how to make a colourful, stacked bracelet. While some may see this activity as something fun to pass time, the Arts Department feels Brynn's act of inspiring a new interest also shows several of the qualities and values that the Artist of the Week represents – creativity, confidence, skill, as well as the already mentioned attributes. Practicing and celebrating art can be found in little everyday moments, and Brynn's actions certainly highlight this. Great job, Brynn!

Willoughby '29
There are people behind every production who quietly make everything work, and Willoughby has quickly become one of those indispensable people for Freaky Friday. Taking on the dual responsibilities of Stage Manager and Choreographer, she brings an extraordinary combination of creativity, organization, and leadership to the production.
Perhaps most impressive is the way Willoughby leads. She leads with patience, kindness, calm confidence, and a clear sense of what needs to happen next. Cast members trust her, look to her for guidance, and benefit enormously from her experience. From creating and teaching choreography to keeping rehearsals organized and supporting the people around her, Willoughby handles an enormous amount with remarkable maturity. The cast is incredibly lucky to have her.

Charlotte '27
One of the things that makes Charlotte such a wonderful member of the Arts at KES is the energy she brings to the people around her. Whether she is in music class or at a Freaky Friday rehearsal, Charlotte’s warmth, enthusiasm, and positive attitude are contagious.
As she prepares for one of the lead roles in Freaky Friday, Charlotte has shown how seriously she takes her work, dedicating her own time to practising and coming to rehearsals prepared and ready to contribute. She also did a fantastic job as part of the Terry Fox Day music performance this fall. In music class especially, Charlotte’s positivity makes a noticeable difference: she participates wholeheartedly, always remains positive, and helps create an environment where everyone can enjoy making music together. That kind of influence is incredibly valuable, and it makes Charlotte a wonderful choice for Artist of the Week.

Harlo '28
When Harlo walks into a rehearsal, she is ready to work. She brings 100% of her effort and focus every time: she knows her material, listens carefully, takes direction, and throws herself completely into whatever is being asked of her. That level of consistency is impressive and sets a wonderful example for the rest of the cast.
This year, Freaky Friday is giving Harlo a challenge that seems uniquely made for her: taking on several completely different characters throughout the show. It requires versatility, confidence, great comic instincts, and the ability to switch gears quickly, and Harlo embraces every part of the challenge. Her experience also makes her a wonderful support to other members of the cast. Harlo’s work ethic is exceptional, and the energy and commitment she brings to the rehearsal room make an enormous difference to the production.
