1966 KCS 'A' Hockey Reunion - Issue 3

Friendship is one of the best parts of school. Forming close connections and bonds that help us become our best selves may be among the most valuable and natural things we do in life. The power of friendship was in brilliant display this past weekend at the reunion of the School’s 1966 championship hockey team.

The moment I topped the staircase to the Spitfire’s upper bar, I felt the emotional warmth of the room. It has been 60 years (!) since these men finished their undefeated season, and all but two of them were present. Flying in from as far away as British Columbia, these men and their partners have formed a community of friends…for life. As one of their goalies, Dave Andrews, said, “We connect instantly with each other, like no time has passed at all.”

Six decades have passed since these men were going to class, doing drill in cadets, singing in Chapel, and dreaming of a provincial title. So long ago, yet indelibly etched in their hearts. So long ago, yet so familiar for every student still on campus today.

I was honoured to meet these good friends. These wonderful men and their wives reminded me of the enduring value and lovely feeling of togetherness.
