Senior Boys Rugby Capture Provincial Championship - Issue 37

A very successful King’s-Edgehill School Senior Boys Rugby team season culminated in the provincial tournament from May 28 to June 6.

After winning the regional title against a tough Horton High School team by a score of 50–19, the boys earned the right to host the provincial quarter-final against their perennial rival, Northumberland. Northumberland defeated KES in this game last year, so our players were keen for a rematch. In their first "do or die" match of the year, KES earned a resounding victory.

With this win, we were able to host the semifinals and final, which took place June 5–6. Bay View, usually one of the top teams in the province, always presents a tough challenge. Our team played a strong game and secured a place in the final on Saturday with a 45–14 win.

This coach has rarely seen a team so focused and driven to play excellent rugby as our young men were on Saturday afternoon. The team knew exactly what they had to do, and they did it better than they had all season long. Their game was characterized by a relentless and skilled attack, crushing defensive pressure, strong tackling, and discipline.

As is the case with most rugby seasons, many of the players were dealing with nagging injuries and soreness, but they overcame it all because they knew the only way to win was to work extremely hard and rely on one another.

They ended up earning a decisive 57–14 victory over a very strong Lockview team.

Everyone played fantastic rugby, but some names of note include our captains, Tommy '26  and Chris '26, "Hammer of the Match" winner Will L. '26, Cameron '26, who played his best game ever, and Will S '26. , who was a monster at No. 8.

A successful season requires a lot of help from a lot of people. We would like to express our thanks to our Athletic Director, Lisa Headley, for all of her administrative support. Jennie Sawler and her athletic therapy team helped keep our players intact throughout the season. Wade Trider and the transportation team got us to our away games safely and on time. Ezra '26 provided a tremendous boost to the players’ morale whenever he led the team to the field with his bagpipes.

Finally, there is no way a successful season would have been possible without the work of the assistant coaches, Christopher Hahner and Head of School Joe Seagram. They worked very hard and devoted a great deal of energy to both the excellent play and the well-being of our players.
