Sr. School Teacher (Visual Arts)
About Our Opportunity
We are seeking an energetic and passionate Visual Arts Teacher to join our Senior School on a full-time (1.0 FTE) basis. This role offers an exciting opportunity to inspire creativity, build technical expertise, and support authentic self-expression in students, all within a culturally responsive learning environment. The successful candidate will teach within the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and NS provincial curriculum guidelines, with a primary focus in Visual Arts and the opportunity to teach an additional course aligned with their experience. Beyond the classroom, you will contribute to co-curricular programs and collaborate across the school to integrate the arts into a well-rounded student experience.
In addition to lesson preparation and classroom teaching, responsibilities include:
- Designing and delivering an engaging Visual Arts curriculum aligned with the IB Diploma Programme, the Nova Scotia Arts curriculum, and the School’s mission
- Fostering students’ development of a personal artistic process through investigation, reflection, critique, and exhibition
- Cultivating creativity, critical thinking, and innovation by encouraging experimentation and artistic risk-taking
- Modelling and actively promote the IB Learner Profile in daily practice
- Conducting formative and summative assessments, including preparation for IB evaluations
- Coordinating and showcasing student artwork through exhibitions and school events
- Maintaining a safe, organized, and inspiring art studio, ensuring responsible use of materials and equipment
- Collaborating within the Arts department and across disciplines to support interdisciplinary programming
- Developing culturally responsive, inclusive curriculum that supports diverse learners
- Communicating regularly with students, and families, regarding student progress, through report cards and parent-teacher meetings
- Supporting students through one-on-one meetings and scheduled tutorial time
- Participating in faculty, department, and committee meetings as required
- Serving as an Advisor to a small group of students
- Contributing fully to school life, including coaching two terms of sports, supporting arts programming, attending and chaperoning events, and participating in duty rotations
- Demonstrating an ongoing commitment to professional growth, including participation in IB professional learning
The Ideal Candidate
- Brings independent school experience, a passion for arts education, and a strong commitment to the KES community
- Holds a valid Teacher’s Certification with a focus in Visual Arts, Fine Arts, or Art Education
- Has a minimum of three years’ experience teaching Visual Arts at the secondary level; IB teaching experience is considered a strong asset
- Demonstrates commitment to collaboration and teamwork, and diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Has a growth mindset, sense of humor, and excellent organizational and communication skills
- Enjoys wearing many hats
- Is dedicated to making positive contributions to the student experience both inside and outside the classroom
- A willingness to assume responsibilities for set design for two theatre productions considered an asset
