From Brain Injury to Museum Exhibit: Mr. Rochon's Story of Healing Through Nature - Issue 4
The Art of Birding
For those who have not had the chance to meet him, Marcel Rochon is a teacher here at King’s-Edgehill School. Some of you may know parts of his story, whether from working alongside him over the years or from hearing him speak on the Birds of a Feather Talk Together podcast about the brain injury he sustained in 2016.
In the years since his injury, Marcel has found healing and connection through birding, nature, and photography. The outdoors has become an important part of his recovery – a focus on finding joy, community, and moments of calm. Birding has also given him a way to share his experiences and connect with others who love nature or have faced similar injuries.
This year marks 10 years since Marcel’s injury. Rather than focusing on the anniversary itself, there is a meaningful milestone to recognize: two of his photographs have been selected for The Art of Birding, an upcoming exhibit at Halifax’s Museum of Natural History. The timing feels especially significant, reflecting not only on Marcel’s growth and ongoing recovery, but also the friendships, community, and sense of purpose his love of birding has brought into his life over the past decade.
The Art of Birding exhibit opens this Saturday, September 26, 2026, and runs until Saturday, January 2nd, 2027. This exhibit will also be open during the Nocturne festivities on Saturday, October 17, from 6:00 pm to midnight. We would love for you to consider visiting the exhibit during its run!
