A Message from our Head of School - Issue 1

I have had some lovely encounters and meetings with our new students since their arrival on campus. From my perspective, the camp is going very well, and each student is embracing this exciting opportunity to have the school to themselves before the other 300 students arrive. One night this week, I asked a question of the assembled students about cultural differences. I wanted to know what they had observed about the people here in Atlantic Canada.

To my delight, I learned that:

These are all very positive observations and warmed my heart to hear. Understanding and appreciating cultural differences are all part of the education and experience of being at KES. There is joy to be found in differences, but there can be friction if one does not appreciate or understand them. For example, being "on time" in Canada typically means everyone should be present and ready for whatever is going to happen. Arriving a little bit earlier than the posted time allows for a bus to depart, or a practice or Chapel service to start, "on time."

We are all looking forward to a very happy and successful school year. As the old Scottish expression goes: "so far, so good!"
