From Debate Camp to Province House: KES Students Visit the Legislature - Issue 2

It's Leo's second time watching the House in session. He first visited Province House last fall to see how citizen petitions move through the legislative process, an experience that gave him a close-up look at how members table petitions, read them into the record, and respond to the public on issues their communities care about. This time, he returned with classmate Henry, and the timing lined up perfectly: the pair had just finished KES's Debate Camp, arriving at the Legislature ready to watch the same skills of argument, procedure, and public speaking they'd been practicing all camp, this time on the floor of a real legislature.

The visit didn't go unnoticed. Hon. Derek Mombourquette, MLA for Sydney-Membertou, paused proceedings to welcome the pair to the House, noting their timing couldn't have been better: "They've just finished Debate Camp so they're ready to take on any one of us." Speaker Danielle Barkhouse welcomed them from the chair as well, remarking on how fitting it was that two students so involved in debate were in the room to see it in action.

For Leo and Henry, the trip was a chance to connect what they're learning at KES with the issues they care about in their own communities. It's exactly the kind of hands-on civics experience that brings classroom learning to life.
