Grade 7 Trip to Grand-Pré National Historic Site - Issue 35
On Tuesday, May 26, we took our Grade 7 classes on a field excursion to learn all about the Acadian experience and diaspora. Beginning at the Grand-Pré National Historic Site, students watched an interactive video focused on Acadian culture and the deportation. Our interpreter then led a serious role-playing activity in the Grand-Pré Church. We then hiked to the viewpoint to reflect through poetry writing and began our map activity.
In the afternoon, students completed a multi-stage math and science activity in which they determined how long it would take the Grade 7 classes to build the dykes originally constructed by hand by the Acadians. In teams, students shovelled dirt into piles as quickly as possible, then measured the actual volume of the dykes. Mr. Kershaw then led students through some scaling math equations to determine that, with an eight-hour workday and five-day work week, it would take approximately 11.9 years for the class to build the dykes.
