Lead School Nurse
About Our Opportunity
We're looking for a Registered Nurse who thrives in a dynamic, student-centered environment and ideally brings experience from a school, camp, or other youth-focused setting. Reporting to the Assistant Head, School Life, the successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the health and well-being of our students through the delivery of health services, first aid and emergency response, and overall student wellness support. This is a fast-paced, rewarding role that requires strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
Primary Responsibilities
- Administer medication to students
- Provide basic health care to students in the case of injury or acute illness during and after office hours
- Assess and monitor student health needs
- Communicate with faculty, students, parents regarding status of heath related issues while maintaining confidentiality
- Develop and implement health plans for students with specific health needs
- Foster a supportive and compassionate environment by providing emotional support and health-related guidance to students.
- Serve as a leader and key contributor to the KES Mental Health and Wellness Team
- Accompany students to hospital and appointments when necessary
- Provide ongoing care and monitoring of students admitted to Infirmary
- Arrange medical appointments for boarding students
- Maintain student medical records
- Prepare medical documentation for student trips and insurance billing
- Manage the daily operations of the nursing office and infirmary including stocking and inventory
- Coordinate Immunization Clinics for students
- Supervise casual nursing staff and coordinate coverage and on-call schedules
- Respond to any health-related issue of students that may occur during and after office hours
- Facilitate health education training sessions for staff and students as required
- Monitoring CPR recertification of staff
- Oversee AED maintenance and quality assurance
- Maintain and distribute First Aid kits to coaches and staff
Qualifications and Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the Nova Scotia Nursing and Midwifery Regulator (NSNMR), or eligibility to obtain registration in Nova Scotia
- Prior experience as a staff nurse in a school or pediatric setting is considered an asset
- Current CPR, First Aid and AED training
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and computerized patient records.
- Excellent communication skills
- Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills
- Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a collaborative team.
- A commitment to the boarding school environment, including a willingness to support the needs of students beyond the traditional school day through participation in after-hours and on-call responsibilities
