The Saint Mary’s University Open indoor track meet was held at the Canada Games Centre on Saturday, February 7. Six of our fastest KES students took part in this annual event, which drew well over 300 athletes ranging from junior high to university competitors.
Fresh from a Team Canada training camp in Grenada and competing for the first time since the Para World Championships in New Delhi, India, Chloe Dunbar ’27 got off to an excellent start to her season. While the first meet of the year is often considered a “rust buster,” Chloe showed no signs of rust, racing to personal bests in both the 60m and 200m. She earned gold in the U18 60m and silver in the U18 200m. Against a field that included university athletes, she also finished second overall in the 60m and third overall in the 200m. In addition, she set two provincial records in the T47 classification.
Chisom Asoh ’27 had a fantastic meet, improving in both the 60m and 200m. She lowered her 60m time by more than a tenth of a second and nearly two-tenths in the 200m. These improvements are especially impressive considering she had already set personal bests just last month.
It does not get much better than becoming the fastest U18 Nova Scotian ever over 200m indoors. That distinction now belongs to Emmanuel Adaramodu ’26. Manny entered the meet with a personal best of 23.58 seconds, while the provincial record stood at 23.16. He shattered that mark by blazing around the track in 22.73 seconds. Emmanuel also recorded a personal best in the 60m, dropping from 7.42 to 7.21 to earn his second U18 gold medal of the day.
Samuel Aderemi ’28 also had an excellent day, lowering his 60m time by well over a tenth of a second before competing in his first indoor 200m.
Chibuikem Ukaegbu ’27 produced one of the biggest improvements of the meet in the 60m, dropping nearly three-tenths of a second, before contesting his first indoor 200m.
Charlie Thornhill ’28 opened his day with his first-ever 60m race, then improved by two-tenths of a second in the 200m later in the meet.
Altogether, our six KES athletes contested twelve races and came away with twelve personal bests and three provincial records. It was truly an outstanding day of racing. As an added bonus,
Chloe Dunbar '27,
Chisom Asoh '27, and
Emmanuel Adaramodu '26 each qualified for the Canadian Indoor Track and Field Championships, to be held in Toronto from February 27 to March 1.
