Wrestling Team Opens Season with Standout Performance — Issue 13

The King’s-Edgehill School Wrestling Team opened this year’s season with their second annual trip to Island View High School in Eastern Passage for the Metro Amateur Wrestling Club’s Nova Scotia Open tournament. We selected a small number of our experienced wrestlers to represent the Windsor Mat Kings and to test their mettle against some of the best competition the Maritimes has to offer. After only six practices in the new season, Kenta Matsuda '27, Thomas LaBrash '26, and Cameron Bradbury '26 represented our School in the dignified and respectful manner that we expect from our student-athletes.

Thomas had a large weight class, having five matches throughout the day. He won his first match via pin after a strong technical display. He finished the day with a 2–3 record and a fourth-place finish.

Cameron, still a relatively new wrestler, having joined us halfway through the season last year, had an even tougher division. He fought through shoulder pain to wrestle his matches, but he came up short in all of them. With his work ethic and determination, he will see greater success in the future.

The highlight for us, and for the tournament, was Kenta Matsuda’s dominant performance. He combined technical prowess with his considerable athleticism to win all four of his matches with a pin and take home a gold medal. He spent most of his downtime studying wrestling videos to hone his skills and to find new moves to try. The quote of the day was from one of his opponents after his third match: “Where did you find that guy?!”

Kenta’s training has paid off not only in terms of a gold medal, but also in his acceptance to the Nova Scotia Provincial Team Program. In the understated words of the head coach, Kenta is a “… strong competitor with solid technical ability and skill execution.” The KES coaches could not agree more. Congratulations, Kenta!

These three athletes will provide guidance and leadership to the rest of the team as they prepare for our next tournament in Yarmouth in January.
