Athletes of the Week (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our athletic philosophy and School mission statement emphasizing gentleness, learning, dignity, and respect. These student athletes also reflect the seven principles of “true sport” which states: go for it, play fair, respect others, keep it fun, stay healthy, include everyone, and give back.
From the break until January 8
Junior Boy – Harvey Hadley ‘27 had a busy weekend at the recent Candy Cane Invitational with 16 individual races over three long days of competition as he swam heats and finals in each event, and then added a 17th race in the 4x50 freestyle relay. He earned gold in 50 metre backstroke, silver in 100m back, silver 200 metre butterfly, and went back to the podium for a bronze in his 400 metre individual medley. Harvey just missed the podium in three events as he placed fourth in 50 metre butterfly, 100 metre butterfly, and 200 metre individual medley. For those of you adding up the meters, between races, warmups and warm downs, Harvey swam over 10 kilometers in three days of competition.
Senior Boy – Isaiah Johnson is a young man who leads by example. He is in the gym early and stays late. He offers inspirational words to his Highlander basketball team to lead them into and during their games. Isaiah had a very prolific week scoring more than 50 points in our two games and has been a go-to player prior to our School break. In fact, Isaiah had 36 points and 12 rebounds in our game against Digby. Well done, Isaiah!
For the Week of January 9-15
Junior Boy – Alex Slaunwhite ‘27 led the Highlander junior boys basketball team to a victory over Summit Academy. He scored on many drives to the basket and distributed the ball to all his teammates.
Senior Girl – Hayden Lilly ‘23 took a major leadership role with our Highlander girls hockey team. Finding a new level to her game, she took care of the small details which will help her succeed to the next level in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Hockey, but also will help with the remainder of our season. She is really showcasing what the second half of the hockey season is all about. From a new position on the power play, to penalty kill and finding ways to shift the momentum, Hayden was one of our go-to players.
Senior Boy – Junsu Kwak ‘25 participated in the Ice Jam Hockey tournament in Bedford against the top U18 AAA teams in the Maritimes. Junsu led the way for our boys, scoring four goals and three assists for seven points in just four games. Aside from points, Junsu played a complete team game, finishing his bodychecks, supporting his teammates on and off the ice, and was excellent on the penalty kill. Out of 24 teams, Junsu earned the honor of being named to second team all-star! Congratulations on a great weekend, Junsu!
