Clay Art Projects for Grades 6, 8 and 9

Clay is one of the most popular mediums in the art department. All ages love it and want to work with this natural material. At each grade level, the students are taught different hand-building techniques such as pinch, slab and coil. When the students are designing their sculpture, they plan what techniques they will use to construct their project. There are a few steps when using clay – construction, drying of the clay, firing in a kiln, glazing (liquid glass) and then the final firing to achieve a clay sculpture which is solid, waterproof and heatproof. Depending on the size of the project, the whole process takes around two weeks. When the final pieces come out of the kiln, it is a very magical transformation.

I hope you enjoy these wonderful sculptures.
