Four KES Wrestlers Crowned Provincial Champions

Team Captains; Ross Traves and Ky Walsh each won gold, at the high school provincial wrestling championships, this past weekend. Both Wrestlers won all their matches by Grand Superiority or by pin. Ross dispensed of his three opponents with relative ease and was certainly the class of the field in the senior boys’ division. He was at the boundary of the 58 kg class and would have been a threat to win either weight class above and below his own. He successfully completed his high school wrestling career winning his third straight provincial championship. Ky defeated her opponents from New Germany, Avonview and Sackville High, before a tight wrestle off in the finals with her opponent from CEC. Ky lead throughout the tense match until late in the second and final round, when her opponent tied it up 10 -10, an instant before Ky hip tossed her opponent to her back and pinned her for the Gold, in what was the toughest female weight class of the tournament. Ky lead our senior girls’ team to a second place team provincial  championship result, with a tough fought silver to Alex Ondo and bronze to Christina Andreas.

Nathan Danquah fought well throughout the tournament, but saved his very best match of the year for his provincial final. Nathan was very tactical and mature in his approach to his final match and was in top form. He eventually won on points to capture his second consecutive provincial championship. Tristan Parker, in his second year with the team and a second place in last years’ provincial finals, captured his first provincial championship in a very tough final against his opponent from Forest Heights. He has matured over the year and has improved on his ground game. He won on points and along with Nathan, led the junior boys’ team to a second place team finish at the Provincials. Alex Otto added to the medal count for the juniors with a silver medal, a repeat from last year. Brisnel Etou Bosseba placed fourth, just out of the medals, but with enough team points to help secure the silver for the junior boys’ team.
Of the 11 wrestlers who we took to provincials, 5 were new to the program, 8 out of 11 athletes brought home individual medals and 9 out of 11 athletes brought home team medals. Thanks to all those wrestlers who contributed to the success of this years’ program.

This wraps up the high school season for the year and rugby will start for most of our boys and girls on Monday. We have a few of our younger wrestlers who will participate in the Atlantic open this coming weekend , in Truro, and we will have two juniors competing in the age group national championships, in Fredericton later in April, accompanied by Ky, who has been identified to assist as a pairing master official for both events.
