KES boys were victorious in the RNS "Top of the Hill" tournament in Rothesay, New Brunswick.
The KES boys division 1 soccer team had an amazing trip to New Brunswick - Sept 12th-14th. Arriving at the hotel later Friday evening the boys had a good rest before our first game Saturday morning. Our first match was against a very physical team from Hampton, NB. The boys moved the ball around well in the first half and after Adrian Danquah just put the ball over the bar, Hampton marched down the field to take a 1-0 lead on a nice finish from their skilled winger. Cody Ettinger and Diego Pereda combined on a lovely overlap but the finish was just wide. Just before halftime KES was awarded a PK and Kyle Yearwood cooly slotted home to tie the game. The physical affair continued into the 2nd half but no more goals were scored with a 1-1 draw the final result. Our second match was against the hosts from RNS. Again, the KES squad was engaged in a physical affair but our ability to move the ball quickly enabled us to create several quality scoring chances but their GK was up to the task and kept the match 0-0. Twenty minutes into the match an own goal gave the hosts a 1-0 lead. After the halftime break, the KES boys absolutely dominated possession and tied the game 1-1 when Kyle Yearwood smashed a free kick from 25 yards into the top left-hand corner. Continued pressure led to another KES penalty shot, and once again Kyle finished to give us the lead 2-1, which held up as the final result. The KES boys finished tied atop the pool and an early morning shootout on Sunday was needed to break the deadlock. Goalkeeper Anthony Corradini did what he had to do and stopped the fourth shot while all 5 KES spot-kickers converted to send KES to the final. Scorers were Kyle Yearwood, David Lee, Inigo Vazquez, Alfonso P., and Cody Ettinger. The championship match was played later on Sunday against the local public high school. Again, we were outsized, but our skill on the ball was apparent as we created several quality scoring chances in the first half, with Inigo Vazquez finally slotting home for a 1-0 lead. The lead held until late in the second half when a nicely converted header saw the opponents draw level. Old-fashioned golden goal overtime ensued and only moments into the first overtime period, Kyle Yearwood launched a rocket of a shot that the goalie could only look at as it found the top corner and a KES tournament victory! The boys all played very well on the weekend, the man of the tournanet goes to Kyle Yearwood. He scored 4 of 5 goals and was a rock in the midfield. The team and coaches are looking forward to a frenetic few weeks ahead!
