Grade 11 IB Visual Arts Mural Project: A Tribute to Alex Colville

As part of our final project, several of my Grade 11 IB Visual Arts students took on the exciting challenge of creating a mural. The theme chosen for the series of murals throughout the School was to celebrate and represent Canadian and Nova Scotian artists.

This particular mural pays tribute to the internationally renowned Canadian artist Alex Colville, who hailed from Wolfville, Nova Scotia. The work was inspired by one of his most iconic paintings, To Prince Edward Island (1965), known for its quiet tension, careful composition, and deep sense of narrative.

I documented the students’ progress each day, and I was genuinely impressed by the speed and dedication with which they worked. Despite the ambitious nature of the project, they completed the mural in a remarkably short time – and the results speak for themselves. Their talent, collaboration, and respect for Colville’s legacy truly shine through in the finished piece.

I’m incredibly proud of this group of young artists – their skill and passion continue to amaze me.
