Asking for Prayer is not a sign of weakness; it is a sign of exponential growth — Issue 7

October 13 is Saint Edward the Confessor Day. Saint Edward the Confessor was one of England’s Anglo-Saxon kings. Edward was known to be a special kind of ruler—not for his power, but for his character.

Edward was gentle, fair, and deeply rooted in faith. He built Westminster Abbey to create a place of prayer for everyone, not to display his authority. Edward was passionate about peace more than his own self-importance. In many ways, Edward was simply blessed.

The Beatitudes speak to the same values Edward lived by. They remind us that those who are truly blessed are not necessarily the richest or the strongest, but those who are kind, forgiving, humble, and peaceful.

Jesus said:

“Blessed are the poor in spirit…
Blessed are the meek…
Blessed are the merciful…
Blessed are the peacemakers.”

As followers of Jesus, Edward reminds us to use what we have to serve others. He exemplified humility and service, not power.

This is how Edward lived: he was humble even as a royal ruler; he practised the art of forgiveness and forgave his enemies, hence, he was merciful; Edward was known to keep peace in his kingdom. He was, in every sense, a peacemaker.

With or without a crown, each of us has a chance every day to live out the Beatitudes: to be kind, especially when others are not; to forgive when times are hard; and bring peace where there is tension. You can be the peace.

During Chapel on Thursday, I provided individual prayer cards for anyone to fill out. Should you wish to use this opportunity, the cards will continue to be available in the Hensley Memorial Chapel, at Chapel services, or you can reach out to me in person. My office has relocated to Convocation Hall (the A. Gordon Cooper Library), and you can also follow up with me via email at dlgreer@kes.ns.ca. Your prayer cards will be placed upon the altar to be prayed over at the Sunday night Service of Holy Eucharist (Mass).

Thankfully, God blesses those who live out the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1–12).

I pray that you are truly blessed.
