See Different Program Builds Youth Leadership in Equity and Inclusion — Issue 20

For the second year, King’s-Edgehill School was proud to participate in the See Different Certificate Program, hosted by the Canadian Centre for Diversity and Inclusion (CCDI) and facilitated by Ashley Sheppard. Ashley continues to be an exceptional guide as students engage in thoughtful, challenging learning around diversity, equity, and inclusion.

See Different is a program whose mission is to empower youth from across Canada by equipping them with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to challenge systemic inequities and create meaningful change within their communities.

Throughout the two-day program, students worked in small groups, allowing for deep, intentional conversations about identity, power, and belonging. Participants explored the benefits of diversity in their lives, examined the history and lived experiences of Indigenous Peoples in Canada, and reflected on systemic barriers that continue to impact inclusion. Emphasis was placed on developing cultural competence, understanding intersectionality, and engaging in youth-led dialogue about what it means to build communities where all people feel seen and valued.

This session, Mira Ethridge '28, LB Fisher '26 , G. Porter '27 , Isabelle Sampson '28, Anna Houghton '28, Nell Mitchell '28, Jasmine Zhu '26, Chelsea Hernandez '28, Harlo Young '28, Lilly Lynds '27 , and Lillian Porter '28 successfully completed Certificate I of the See Different program, with the option to continue to Certificate II offered this spring. We are proud of their openness, curiosity, and willingness to engage deeply in this important work.

We extend our sincere thanks to CCDI and Ashley Sheppard for offering this impactful program and for their continued commitment to youth leadership in equity, diversity, and inclusion.
