Honouring the Fallen: A New Commemorative Crosswalk at King’s-Edgehill School — Issue 12

To recognize the fallen in war, every Remembrance Day, King’s-Edgehill School reverently honours those who attended the School and gave the ultimate sacrifice fighting for peace. This year, this remembrance has taken visual form with the installation of a new commemorative crosswalk near the School’s cenotaph.

The project began a year ago when current Grade 11 student Rowan Francis '27 developed an idea that was shaped by both his sense of service and his family’s strong military history. Rowan’s insight set the tone for what would become a thoughtful, collaborative effort. As KES Faculty Karen Jones so eloquently expressed, “While a formal crosswalk guides safe passage across a road, this crosswalk guides our thoughts and remembrance toward peace and compassion for humanity, for now and evermore.”

The idea soon gained additional momentum when Bill Sanson, a retired Commander in the Navy and current KES parent, stepped forward to help bring the vision to life. Drawing on his contacts, Bill ensured the project would be professionally completed and served as a key driver in moving it forward.

Head of School Joe Seagram then invited faculty member Karen Jones, who was instrumental in both designing and overseeing the project, to help refine the concept and work directly with EverLine Coatings, the paint company entrusted with the installation. Ms. Jones created a detailed paint sketch and proportional measurements to guide the crew’s work.

Despite weather challenges, when heavy rain delayed progress, EverLine’s Kyle persevered, managing to paint much of the design on the morning of November 11. The finishing touches were completed on November 17, resulting in a beautiful tribute that our entire community can now experience.

Fittingly adorned with poppies and sentry silhouettes, the crosswalk stands as a vivid marker of reflection both for the young men of our School who served and for the kindness and compassion we strive to carry forward.

We will remember them.
