As I walked the grounds at KES, I noted that the leaves on some of the trees were changing colour, but not all. This week, I observed in a row of green trees, one tree had turned red. Not only had the leaves turned red, but they were also falling to the ground. Right now, the trees are in different stages; yet they are in the same soil, much like everyone here on campus.
Here in Nova Scotia, we know that during the change of the season from summer to fall, some leaves change colour, some fall to the ground before changing, and some hold onto a branch with all their might, attempting to change. If the leaf does not change colour and dries up, it does not make room for the new leaf months down the road.
The branch, which is attached to the trunk, has deep roots in the ground running wildly beneath the grass. The roots are the foundation and the strength that support the tree to weather all storms and seasons, and also to absorb the joy of the sun and the rain. Similarly, we have roots that cannot be seen. These roots can be values, love, faith, family, and so on. Our roots and foundation help stabilize us to weather the storms, the changes, the ups and downs in life, and finally to celebrate life. Each of us is a unique individual, yet we are all rooted in the same soil.
Being unique, like the leaves, we sometimes fall, yet our new growth is like a bright green leaf. We first must endure the storms, the change of season, and fall before that new growth can occur. We regrow with the support of a stronger trunk that continues to grow and roots that continue to extend deeper and deeper. That leaves fall is a sign of HOPE and gives way for new growth. Growth is not easy, and sometimes it’s messy like scattered leaves on the lawn. Though it is messy, it is bright, crisp, and fun! It is fun to jump in the pile of leaves in the fall. This fall, I invite you to celebrate the change of the season within yourself and breathe in all that this fall has to offer you.
In the upcoming weeks, students will be asked what their hope is for the school year. We will invite the students at KES to share their hope on a leaf and create a Tree of HOPE collectively on one of the school walls. This tree will be a reminder of what is to come in the next season.
