Grade 6 and 7 Art Classes Try Resist Art Making Technique

Making art is sometimes about what is not intended. The process of artistic expression works with positive and negative space, light and dark, and for example, the use of resist medium to influence art making.

The Grade 6 and 7 art classes have been learning what using a resist medium is all about. The composition was inspired by dandelions, and the resist medium was a white oil pastel. Using the pastel to define certain lines and shapes, the students then painted the composition in watercolour paint. The oil pastel resists or repels the watercolour paint but the paint leaves a slight residue of colour. The next step was to redefine the dandelions by tracing around the organic islands of colour with a soft lead pencil.

This project was also about allowing a process to unfold and to resist habituation.
