Spring Time Gold Star Expedition at Scenic Falls Lake

This past week, Grade 10 students, CIs and officers departed for the Gold Star Expedition at Falls Lake. With over 80 Grade 10s in attendance, this is one of the largest off-campus activities that takes place in the springtime.

The campground provided a beautiful backdrop for leadership and adventure training. Camping is in a peaceful, outdoor environment next to tranquil Falls Lake. It is this very lake where we offer our springtime canoeing program.

New skills were taught and implemented, such as setting up a tent, lighting a fire in the fire pit, and how to fuel and then light Coleman stoves and lanterns. These are all important skills to know and are taught by knowledgeable officers in the Cadet Expedition program.

The burgers, hot dogs, and salad for lunch on the day of arrival were a fantastic treat. We ate very well the entire expedition. The day would conclude with a bonfire by the lake and s'mores for the group to enjoy.

Cadets camped in tents with warm days turning into cool nights. Arctic sleeping bags were given to each cadet to sleep in. It was commented about the next morning how cool the evenings are when the sun goes down.

Hiking Mount Moses back to Falls Lake provided a chance to explore the beautiful trails through the wooded campgrounds. Teamwork skills through the scavenger hunt and learning how to build shelters if lost in the woods were also taught. Students showed ingenuity in their many shelter designs.

Skills on how to read a map and understand how to use a compass were taught to this eager group who is working towards getting their cadet gold star qualification.

To be able to enrich the learning experience in an outdoor environment enhances the King’s-Edgehill School experience. This is a wonderful challenge for our students through the cadet program.
