En Plein Air

En plein air is a French expression meaning “in the open air” and this expression refers to the act of painting outdoors with the artist's subject in full view. Plein air artists capture the spirit and essence of a landscape or subject by incorporating natural light, colour, and movement into their works.

During the last few weeks students in Grades 9 to 11 have ventured outside to experiment with painting, using watercolours. The students have already experimented with Chinese watercolour bamboo brushes and different techniques. With the watercolour assignment, the students experimented with the technique using ink and watercolours.

They were tasked with focusing on a building on campus. After this, a few students wanted to paint other buildings that were inspired by their travels.
