William Larder '26 Shines on Global Stage at WIDPSC in Australia

William Larder '26 (Will) has capped off an outstanding season in debate and public speaking by qualifying for the prestigious World Independent Debate and Public Speaking Competition (WIDPSC) held in Canberra, Australia. To earn this honour, students must rank among the top performers in select tournaments designed to showcase their debating and public speaking skills. Will achieved this distinction through his performance at the IISPSC Tournament hosted by Little Flower Academy in Vancouver last fall. Excelling in all three of his categories, Will emerged as one of just 19 students selected to represent Canada on the global stage.

The WIDPSC, hosted by Canberra Girls Grammar School, drew talented students from across the globe to compete in the highest levels of impromptu speaking, debate, interpretive reading, and delivering either an after-dinner or persuasive prepared speech. Preparation for such a rigorous event is extensive, involving months of intense training and practice to excel in each category.

Will's journey to Canberra, accompanied by his mother, Katherine Warren, included stops in Vancouver and Sydney, offering them the opportunity to explore these vibrant cities along the way.

The competition spanned six days, from April 14 to 20, featuring a wide array of prepared and impromptu speaking and debating events. Reflecting on his experience, Will highlighted the incredible camaraderie among participants from diverse countries including Korea, England, South Africa, Hong Kong, and Lithuania. Despite the competitive nature of the event, there was a palpable sense of friendship, mutual respect, and support among the contestants, many of whom shared a common journey and passion.

As a school, we are so proud of Will’s dedication and achievements in debate and public speaking. His passion and natural talent in these fields have been evident throughout his journey, and we are confident that his skills will continue to lead him to new heights and adventures.
