KES Attends Districts @ Acadia University (Thu 19 & Fri 20 May 2016)
Athletes, Parents and Supporters of KES Track and Field:
If the Hants-Kings District doesn’t have the fastest, highest and longest marks in all of the districts of Nova Scotia, then we come mighty close to that distinction. The goal of many of our athletes was to place among the top 4 in their event in order to proceed to the Regional Championships next Friday and Saturday, also at Acadia University. That is a tall order in our region, but we were very successful. Most of the athletes know at this point if they are competing next weekend, but a full list of KES students will be sent out as soon as we are officially notified. (If you want to check ASAP, then the results will be posted on the NSSAF website sometime this weekend: http://goo.gl/zlZ3V1 ) Again, all athletes who finished among the top 4 in a track event (individual or relay) and among the top 5 in a field event have qualified. How busy have your athletes and coaches been this weekend? There were 150 individual entries on the weekend from KES. That equates to well over 200 races, throws and jumps by KES athletes. It is difficult to acknowledge all the fine performances, but I at least want to point out those KES athletes that won their event: Grade 10 student Meredith Chambers led the team with not only three individual wins (800m, 1500m, 3000m) but each of her times are now Hants-Kings intermediate district records. Duncan McLaughlin (’20) won his junior division discus throw. Brisnel Etou Bosseba (’20), first in the junior high jump. Mae Batherson (’19), first, intermediate 80m hurdles. Joshua Mills first in the intermediate shot put. Katharine Traves (’17) first in the senior 3000m. Erin Cecchetto (’16) proved herself the fastest senior girl in the district with her 100m win. And, the Senior Girls team won the banner for top district team: Erin Cecchetto (’16), Abigail Shearer (’16), Maria Ingraham (’16), Maria Ines Chávez Fernández del Busto (’16), Katharine Traves (’17), Patti-Anne Tracey (’17), Julia Schmitt (’17), Taylor Amirault (’17), Jillian Miller (’17), Diala Toulany (’17). It is worth pointing out that each and every senior girls member contributed point to their overall win, truly a team effort.
Astute fans of track and field will notice how strongly that previous paragraph points to the breadth of our athletes and coaches in that there were able to produce wins in sprinting, distance events, jumping events and throwing events (and two different throws at that). Once the official results come out, you will also see our great depth. A special thank you to our coaches that did double duty this week as officials running the high jump competition (Mr.Marcel Rochon, and Ms.Sue Bouwman) and the javelin throw competition (Mr.Manny Avila, and Ms.Sue Bouwman). Another thank you to Mr. Manny Avila as he also organized our officiating for these two events over the past three weeks. As soon as I have all the information, a list of participants and a schedule for the Regional championships will be forthcoming. Till then, have a great weekend.
