KES goes 2-2 to finish 4th place in the annual KES Invitational.
KES TOURNAMENT
KES hosted the annual KES Invitational and once again turned in a very respectable performance. With teams hailing from one end of Nova Scotia to another, the field was filled with quality teams.
Day 1:
KES 1 CEC 0
In the opening tournament match, KES faced a well-organized CEC squad.
The opening 20 minutes was contested evenly but in the 20th minute the CEC keeper was forced to make a nice save when A. Danquah played a nice ball through for rookie A. Kofoworade.
After the restart both teams exchanged chances but it wasn’t until K. Yearwood scored a fantastic header that the game saw its first and only goal. Kyle was horizontal as he outjumped the keeper to power the ball home with only 10 minutes remaining.
A great opening game for the KES boys!
KES 3 Yarmouth 3 (KES wins 5-3 on PK’S)
In the afternoon game the KES defensive corps was unprepared for the speed of the Yarmouth strikers and long ball after long ball paid off as Yarmouth took a deserved 1-0 lead only 15 minutes into the match.
Minutes before halftime T. Prado scored a fantastic goal with a blistering shot from 22 yards away only to have Yarmouth reclaim the lead a minute later after a defensive miscue.
The second half was played in a more controlled manner and KES quickly drew level when Yearwood made an amazing run up the wing, beating 3 players before playing the ball across the face of goal where co-captain Cody Ettinger dummied the ball perfectly for veteran striker Colin MacQuarrie who buried his first of the year.
A foul in the area led to a KES penalty and Yearwood calmly slotted home for a 3-2 KES lead. KES seemed to be in control but a wonder strike off of a Yarmouth free-kick sent the game to a penalty shoot-out.
All 5 of the KES shooters scored to earn a 5-3 victory. Shooters were: Yearwood, Ettinger, Prado, MacQuarrie, and the winner from Z. Ocole-Akorimo. A. Zenteno played brilliantly in goal for KES.
Day 2:
KES 2 Halifax West 7
With a spot in the tournament final on the line the KES squad was excited to get on the pitch with the talented crew from Halifax.
For the first 20 minutes KES played wonderfully as they gave the West lads no time on the ball and both teams were pushing forward and creating chances.
An unlucky deflection gave the West a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes and after some poor marking and a giveaway the West was suddenly up 3-0 just 5 minutes later.
In the second half C. MacQuarrie picked out the corner after a nice pass from N. Danquah to cut the lead to 3-1 but Halifax West responded quickly to regain the 3 goal cushion. The teams traded goals moments later with rookie Alex Otto scoring his first senior goal after a beautiful run down the wing and cross from Ettinger. A late goal saw the final score 7-2.
Disappointed to lose the boys know that with hard work and attention to detail the score line will be different if the teams face off in the playoff round.
Bronze Medal Match
KES 1 Riverview 2
In a replay of the 2014 bronze medal match the Sydney school reversed the result to earn a 2-1 victory.
Ettinger finished off a very well taken cross by Alex Otto to give KES a 1-0 lead just 7 minutes into the match and were unlucky not to go up by several more over the next 5 minutes; unfortunately Riverview scored on a free kick after 15 minutes and then took the lead after a bad bounce just 5 minutes later.
KES was not able to tie the game and Riverview earned a deserved 2-1 victory.
There are many things to work on in the coming weeks but overall the boys had a good weekend and will face Park View (defending provincial champions) on the 22nd in their first league game of the season.
