KES Wrestlers bring home medals from Eastern Canadian Championships

Ky, Alex Ondo and Nathan each bring home silver medals from Eastern Canadian Wrestling Championships.
Three KES Wrestlers Medal at Eastern Canadian Championships

We sent three KES wrestlers off to the Eastern Canadian Wrestling Championships at UNB in Fredericton this past weekend and all three won silver medals (Ky, Alex and Nathan). As a club we wrestle under the “Windsor Mat Kings”, with Ky and Alex, combined with Kaitlyn from Mount Uniake, winning the juvenile/junior team championship. The wrestlers enjoyed watching the UNB Open tournament prior to the Easterns. This was a chance to watch some of the best university and open wrestlers in the region challenge each other from as far away as Maine and Montreal.
Ky Walsh, Alexandra Ondo and Nathan Danquah competed against other wrestlers from Eastern Canada, with Nathan winning his final match against his opponent from N.B. in a very defensive match. Nathan was down in the first round 0-1 after being called for passivity, resulting in his opponent being awarded a point. The match continued at 0-1 until late in the second and final round when Nathan tied the match 1-1 with a flurry of offensive action, resulting in his opponent stepping out of the circle. This tied the match 1-1, with 15 seconds left. Nathan won the match on the tie, which put him into a three way tie for first. Ky and Alex wrestled in the Juvenile age group – up to 18 years of age. Fortunately the juniors, up to 20 years of age, were included in Ky’s weight class and she was able to test herself against a UNB wrestler. She was fortunate to win this match with a throw and pin in less than 15 seconds. Her final match, against one of our club wrestlers, resulted in a loss by points after getting caught in a laced ankles move. Alex was fortunate to have had the opportunity to wrestle a national champion in her age group, and scored two points on her with an arm drag and outside single leg trip.
Each of the athletes enjoyed the experience and this event will add to their development throughout the year. Although the school will be on break this weekend, we will have most of our wrestlers active at the Atlantic High School Wrestling Festival, being hosted at Sackville High on Saturday, January 31st.
