20th Annual King’s – Edgehill School Wrestling Tournament

With over 200 wrestlers and more than 300 matches, KES hosted a great 20th Anniversary event. Our junior boys’ team, with only three boys, placed third overall, after these same three boys ended last year with a silver medal for second place overall at the provincial championships. With only 12 total KES wrestlers competing in the tournament, we were fortunate to claim 6 individual medals.
Gold medalist in the junior 69 kg weight class, Alex Otto, was undefeated and continues to develop his tactical skills and is sure to make great improvements throughout the year, with more time on the mat. He is extremely coachable and responds well to instruction. He led a strong group of three wrestlers, joined by Tristan Parker and Nathan Danquah who each placed second in the 58 & 85 kg junior categories respectively. Tristan had a great tournament and wrestled tough. He will excel with more practice and competitive opportunities as he balances his time with developmental hockey as well as hockey outside school hours. We will look to Nathan Danquah to step up his competitive edge to ensure our boys maximize their team points throughout the season.
Three of our senior wrestlers were arguably in three of the greatest matches of the day. Team captains Ross Traves and Kyla Walsh showed by example why they are the leaders of our team with Ross giving a technical clinic in his opening couple of matches and Kyla went on to defeat an extremely tough Parkview athlete in her fourth and final match, only to lose the championship in a three way tie break decided on win times. Alex Ondo, a grade 11 student and first year wrestler, went onto the finals against one of the 2013 Canada Games Wresters. Although she did not win on points, she won many accolades in pushing her opponent to two very exciting rounds, as well as the respect of her opponent, spectators and her very appreciative teammates. One of the most rewarding and exciting tournament performances of the day was put in by senior 69 kg grade 12 student Brian MacKenzie. Brian did not claim any wins on the day, but he wrestled two of the very best competitors in his very populated weight class, both medalists, and pushed both of his competitors. In one of his matches he had his opponent on his back and was close to getting the pin, but eventually lost his hold, but not his drive.
Thanks to the parent and student volunteers who assisted with scoring and timing, Girls’ Rugby Team for the canteen services and the maintenance department and Kitchen staff for a superb event.
We will be taking four of our wrestlers to Fredericton this coming weekend to the Eastern Canadian Championships and this will be followed by the Sackville High – Atlantic High School Wrestling Festival on the following weekend, over our February break.
