The Drowsy Chaperone is a clever, side-splitting musical comedy that affectionately parodies the classic Broadway shows of the 1920s. The story unfolds in the apartment of a lonely musical theatre fan, known simply as “Man in Chair,” who decides to play his favourite record — the cast album of a fictional 1928 musical called The Drowsy Chaperone. As the record spins, the glamorous world of the show comes to life around him, complete with eccentric characters, catchy jazz numbers, and a chaotic wedding weekend gone awry. With gangsters disguised as pastry chefs, a bumbling best man, and a tipsy chaperone who can’t resist the bottle, hilarity ensues at every turn. Both a loving tribute and a playful spoof, The Drowsy Chaperone captures the magic, absurdity, and pure joy of musical theatre.
Though this is officially the Senior School musical, there is a great deal of enthusiasm and involvement from the Junior School this year as well. This energetic cast and crew have been working hard since the first week of school to bring this hilarious show to life for audiences.
This week, we would like to put the spotlight on a few of our participants:

Ari Schawrz ‘26 has been a wonderful new addition to the Grade 12 class and to the arts at KES. This year, he takes on the role of Aldolpho in
The Drowsy Chaperone — a melodramatic, self-proclaimed “ladies’ man” whose over-the-top antics bring both charm and comedy to the stage. Ari’s natural charisma and strong stage presence make him an excellent fit for the part. His dedication, enthusiasm, and sense of humour shine through in every rehearsal, and his positive attitude has made him a valued and inspiring member of the cast. Ari’s creativity and confidence on stage promise exciting things for the production!
A Grade 9 student who has been part of the KES community for many years now,
Willoughby Larder ’29 shines in every corner of school life and is a key player in the arts at KES. This year, she takes on the role of George in
The Drowsy Chaperone — the anxious yet well-meaning best man whose attempts to keep a wedding on track lead to hilarious chaos. Her sharp comedic timing, expressive acting, and confident tap-dancing skills bring George’s energy and charm to life. Willoughby’s focus, enthusiasm, and leadership in rehearsals make her an invaluable part of the cast!
In his final year at KES, Ashton Houghton ‘26 brings warmth, humour, and charisma to his role as Robert in The Drowsy Chaperone — the cheerful groom whose enthusiasm and clumsy charm make him both endearing and hilarious. With his strong vocals, natural stage presence, and impressive progress in tap dancing, Ashton captures Robert’s joyful spirit and physical comedy beautifully. His commitment to developing the role and his positive energy in rehearsals have made him a key part of the production’s success. Ashton’s portrayal of Robert is sure to leave audiences smiling and fully entertained.
