In late February, the Junior School musical Willy Wonka Junior will grace the stage of our Fountain Performing Arts Centre. In preparation for our big show, our students have been very busy painting the set design.
A painted backdrop, which is often a vital part of set design, is a broad canvas depicting the general feel and theme of the show and requires large scale and proportional drawing. It usually gets painted while laying flat on the floor.
Our Grade 8 and 9 drama classes and Grade 6 art class have been helping with the painting and learning some scenic painting techniques. With large scale elements outlined and painted already, the students added details to highlight the design and balance shapes and colours. With some of the students acting in the play and others helping backstage, this is a wonderful experience for them to learn and appreciate the work that goes into a production.
