On October 13, my Grade 8 Social Studies class teamed up with Ms. Wade's Canadian Studies class, and we had the opportunity to visit an incredible sustainable salmon farm, Sustainable Blue, located near Centre Burlington, Nova Scotia. I am so incredibly proud of the excursions we can go on that are so close to our School, witnessing people doing absolutely extraordinary things.
Dave Roberts is not only my "uncle-in-law," but also the co-owner and development manager of Sustainable Blue, the world's only sustainable salmon farm that closes the loop at the end of the cycle, reusing the wastewater for other means, creating zero wastewater emissions.
Students were given a wonderful tour from the lifecycle of the salmon, starting as a tiny egg and transforming into gorgeous deep blue salmon. We enjoyed walking through the buildings and learning about how the life of a salmon, beginning in fresh water and moving to salt water, is emulated gradually and carefully within multiple buildings in the complex. We particularly enjoyed seeing the "fish water slide," a tube that pumps the fish and water from building to building.
Overall, it was a beautiful day for a wonderful excursion. Students took back lots of knowledge and understanding about aquaculture and the life cycle of wild salmon. Thanks, Sustainable Blue!
