The Best Girls Basketball Programme East of Montreal!
Over the last week, our prep girls’ basketball team played the top three ranked School Sport Nova Scotia (SSNS) Division 1 teams in the province, a group the next provincial champion will most likely come from.
On Friday, November 27, Halifax West came to KES bringing their first place undefeated Metro League record. Our prep girls jumped out to a 17-0 lead four minutes into the game with Lauren Hainstock ‘22 and Rain Jhaj ‘22 leading the Highlanders to an eventual 87-55 victory over the Warriors.
A week later, Friday night lights were shining as the Citadel Phoenix visited KES, bringing a one loss record to our Ted Canavan Athletic Centre. The Highlanders were a bit guilty of looking past the Phoenix to the matchup the next day, but eventually steadied themselves and pulled away for a 90-67 victory. Vanessa Vaughan ‘22 and Lauren Boon ‘23 were spark plugs on the offensive side, and Julia Field ‘23 was excellent on both ends of the floor.
Saturday morning brought a highly anticipated matchup between the undefeated in league and exhibition play, number one overall ranked in Nova Scotia and either number one or number two in the Maritimes – an argument that involves Fredericton High and Cobequid Educational Centre (CEC). Many people were waiting for this game that brought out Atlantic University Sport (AUS) coaches, media, and some interested fans as everyone was convinced CEC was the team to challenge our prep team. The Highlanders quickly answered the questions posed by the “industry” and led with a barrage of three pointers by Gala Holm ‘22 and Ella Descoteau ‘23 raced out to a 30-point lead at halftime. The girls were in the mood to prove a point and finished the Cougars off with a totally dominating 50-point win 106-56. A ripple went through the Nova Scotia basketball world as there is now no doubt where the best girls basketball programme east of Montreal resides – right here at King’s-Edgehill.
This year’s team set a few programme records on Saturday versus CEC, including the most points scored in one game, number of assists, and they made 90% of the foul shots, which is amazing considering that elite girls basketball hovers around 60% in game play. Our team has a reputation for being a very high scoring, up fast tempo team, and averaging over 86 points per game for their last six games (including averaging 94 points per game versus Nova Scotia schools).
The girls are in great spirits and ready for exams and of course the Christmas break!
