Pink in the Rink Tournament
This weekend we hosted league rivals Rothesay Netherwood School for two games in the Newport and District Rink in Brooklyn. It is a rare event for us to have home games in our brand new facility!
Saturday marked our first ever "Pink in the Rink" game. Our girls went above and beyond preparing and fundraising for this event. Some of the fundraisers we hosted ahead of the game included a dress down day at school and a bake sale. At the game, the girls wore pink jerseys (graciously donated to us for the game by the Dalhousie Tigers women's hockey team) and we had a "chuck a puck" competition between the periods with the winner receiving a special KES prize! An amazing performance in net by Maggie Baxter and a late tying goal from Co-Captain Jordyn Hickey, wasn’t enough to secure the win but, after all was said and done, the girls raised over $1,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society! It was a huge success!
A very special thank you to Kelly Duggan who joined us for the ceremonial puck drop. Kelly is in her final week of treatments for breast cancer, and we couldn't have had a better representative to show the crowd why the girls had worked so hard all week to raise money for a good cause!
On Sunday, after all the excitement of the day before, the girls came to the rink hungry to avenge a late 2-1 loss. They made their coaches proud with a bounce-back game and held on hard for a 1-0 win. Jenna Leighton got the lone goal and Deanna Fraser had another great performance in net and the big shutout. Thanks again to all our friends, family, staff, alumni and fans who came to the games and made the weekend such a big success!
Our Girls’ Hockey team is back in action again on November 17th, as we head to New York for our first league crossovers!
