Horton defeated KES 2-1 in the Western region semi-final match.
KES travelled the short distance down the highway to face off against Horton High School for a spot in the regional final on Oct. 24th.
With wet and windy conditions the match started off well for KES. With the wind in our favour we moved the ball around very well and pinned Horton into their own half. Despite the possession the team struggled to create quality chances in the attacking third. After 30 minutes Santiago Probert Avila struck a shot beautifully from 22 yards away only to have it ring off the crossbar. KES came close again off a Cody Ettinger corner kick but the ball sailed through the box just out of reach of Colin MacQuarrie and Adrian Danquah. Our back line was solid in keeping the ball in the opposition half. David Lee controlled the backline but Constantin Lucas, Josh Mills, and Liam Hogan were outstanding in shutting down the potent Horton transition game.
With the game tied at half KES knew they'd have to approach the game with a different tactic playing against the wind. Unfortunately the adjustments weren't enough to keep Horton off the scoreboard as the wind wreaked havoc with a free kick and keeper Andres Zeneno saw it deflect off his fingers, the post, along the line, and finally in the net for a 1-0 Horton lead. Only 10 minutes later a foul in the box led to a Horton PK being converted for a 2-0 lead.
Down 2-0 in that wind was a mountain to climb; however, the boys kept their heads up and played with tenacity and courage. We began to carry the play and began to create a ton of pressure and excellent scoring opportunities. Striker Colin MacQuarrie was absolutely robbed by the Horton goalie after hitting a wonderful header that seemed destined for the back of the net, and Raul Gonzalez was unlucky to have several shots blocked at the last second. He played a fantastic match in the midfield alongside Carson Ripoll. Liam Hogan terrorized the Horton wingers as he pushed forward and played balls into the box. Eventually, the sustained pressure led to a PK call in our favour and captain Cody Ettinger buried his shot into the top right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1.
With only 8 minutes to play KES pushed hard for the equalizer and rookie substitute Nathan Danquah came agaonizingly close to tying the match on 2 occasions but his shots just missed each corner.
Despite being disappointed, the coaches were very proud of the boys 'never give up' attitude. Everyone played an excellent match but as we all know - sports doesn't always yield the result we hope for.
I'd like to thank all of the players for their contributions this season but I would be remiss if I didn't point out the amazing dedication and commitment from seniors David Lee and Cody Ettinger. Being members of the senior team for an amazing 5 and 4 years respectively they gave everything they had to the programme and made coaching the team a FAR easier job. Thank you boys, you will be missed.
Best of luck to all players as we soon switch to winter term sports.
