Athletes of the Week

Athletes of the Week (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our athletic philosophy and School mission statement emphasizing gentleness, learning, dignity, and respect. These student athletes also reflect the seven principles of “true sport” which states: go for it, play fair, respect others, keep it fun, stay healthy, include everyone, and give back.  

Our most experienced wrestler, Grade 9 Giacomo Pogliani ‘27, won gold in a dominant fashion, at our recent SSNS Provincial Wrestling Championships. His technical skills and mental toughness helped him win the day, and we are looking forward to seeing what he can do at the senior level. He was out training with the senior boys rugby team on Monday afternoon and will be juggling rugby and wrestling this spring as he will be competing at the U-17 National Wrestling Championships in Mississauga, Ontario in early April and will compete in other Atlantic tournaments as part of his preparations. In the past week, Harvey Hadley ‘27 has showcased the versatility of being a multi-sport athlete. In addition to playing basketball on our junior team throughout the week, he also played a key role in securing an entry for the intermediate alpine ski team in the provincial championship on Wednesday. Over the weekend, he competed in the David Fry East Coast Swimming Championships, which featured top swimmers from 28 teams across the Atlantic provinces. On Sunday night, Harvey struck gold in the grueling 200-metre butterfly race in the 14-15 year age group.

The highlight of the senior boys wrestling team, at the recent SSNS Provincial championships was captain Graydon Spence ‘24. He went 5-0 to dominate his 20-plus competitor weight division. He wrestled the most technical matches we have seen in a long time, all while staying cool, calm, and collected. His path to gold included a 30-second victory over an opponent, and defending provincial champion, he had yet to defeat. Congratulations on a great season and best of luck on the rugby pitch!

Our girls wrestling team was led by a dominant performance by Frances Aceron ‘24 at the recent SSNS Provincial Wrestling Championships. She made the transition from D1 Basketball, wrestling superfan, and volunteer to awesome competitor. Spectators could not believe she had never wrestled in competition before, given her physical and technical dismantling of her opponent to win a gold medal. She combined exceptional technique with athleticism and coachability. Some of her wrestling practices were just prior to basketball playoff matches. She continues her multi-sport commitment by jumping directly onto the rugby pitch. Best of luck in the spring term Frances.
