Girls Win Cavs Classic

The senior girls basketball team capped off what has been a great start to the pre-Christmas portion of the season by capturing gold at Cole Habour High’s Cavs Classic tournament last weekend. The team played tremendous, fast-paced team basketball in each of their three games and left no doubt.

The girls opened the tournament against Sackville High which had some sharp-shooting players that kept our girls honest early in the game. Luckily, our confidence grew as the game wore on and the girls cruised to a 67-37 win. Gabby Shaw ‘25 was singled out for her effort on the floor and was awarded the Hustle Award while Meaghan MacNeil ‘24, who has been a leader on the floor all season long picked up Player of the Game recognition. With the win, the girls moved on to the tournament semi-final and faced a familiar foe in the Mariners from Yarmouth. In what would be our third game against Yarmouth already in this young season, our girls looked to complete the always-difficult task of registering three straight wins against the same team. By relying on strong defense and ball movement, our girls were able to register the 64-30 victory which punched our ticket to the tournament final. Sierra Phillips ’25 was awarded the Hustle Award while team captain Frances Aceron ‘24 was named our Player of the Game.

The final put us against a well-coached and athletic Citadel junior varsity team. Despite their junior varsity tag, this Citadel team was experienced and pushed our girls from the opening tip-off. This time, it was our patience and trust in one another that allowed us to weather the storm from Citadel and win in convincing fashion by a score of 80-51. Abbey MacRae’s ‘24 phenomenal play on both ends of the floor earned her Player of the Game in the final, while Grade 9 dynamo Natalia Shaw ‘27 picked up the Hustle Award. At the tournament’s end, Gabby Shaw was recognized as a tournament All-Star while the pride of Estevan, Saskatchewan Frances Aceron took home the Tournament MVP honours!

The girls head into the Christmas break with an overall record of 5-2 (2-0 in league play). In 2024 the girls have a full schedule against many top schools from across the province including a trip to PEI for the Confederation City Classic Tournament before hosting our own February Frost tournament here on campus.
