Highlanders Boys Hockey MPHL Showcase

The Highlanders boys hockey team traveled down to Wilkes-Barre, PA this past weekend to compete in our second league showcase. We were very shorthanded going into this weekend with a few players not able to make the trip and some injuries running through the team.

After a long couple of days of travel, the Highlanders took on the host Wyoming Seminary in their first game of the weekend. The team came up just short after a crazy 7-6 game that saw Wyoming Seminary come out on top. The second game of the day saw the Highlanders run into a veteran Gilmour Academy that was playing its first game of the weekend. We had a very short bench for this game and being our second game in less than five hours, the boys ran out of gas falling to Gilmour.

On the second day of the showcase, we played just one game against another veteran team, Lake Forest Academy. The team again battled very hard and put in a great effort, unfortunately falling short again 8-4.

The last game of the showcase saw us face off against Shady Side Academy. We lost another player due to a shoulder injury and had to play this game with eight forwards and four defensemen. Fighting an uphill battle, the boys put in their best effort of the weekend taking a 4-2 lead into the final seven minutes of the game. Unfortunately, Shady Side Academy scored three unanswered goals, including one with 0.4 seconds left in the game giving the Highlanders a heartbreaking loss.

All in all, the team put in a fantastic effort given the short bench we had. Brodie Wood ‘24 had an outstanding showcase recording two hat-tricks for a total of nine points in four games.

The Highlanders finish off before the holidays with a game against Kings U16 Hockey Club in Sackville on Saturday, December 9, and then a two game set against Champions Hockey Academy at home on December 14 at 8:00 pm and December 15 at 11 am.
