Congratulations Regional Spelling Champ, Amelia Glass!

Just at the start of March break, Grade 7 students Amelia Glass '27 and Maanvi Manchineni '27 represented KES at the Nova Scotia Spelling Bee hosted by Cape Breton University in Sydney. Donning their number one uniform, the girls were confident, poised, and represented our entire School community very well. 

While Maanvi lasted a number of rounds, it was Amelia who stole the show. Each time she stepped to the mic, she seemed more focused than the time previous and confidently took down word after word. By the designated break time, Amelia and one other speller remained. As we waited she said, "I just want to go back and spell!" 

After a few back-and-forth rounds between the final two spellers, Amelia was unflappable as she was given the word "squeamish". Using her palm as an imaginary note pad, she quickly rattled off each of the nine letters correctly to be named Nova Scotia Spelling Bee Champion!

With the win, Amelia not only was awarded the Scripps Regional Spelling Bee Championship trophy, but also earned flights and accommodation for two to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC later this year!

Although we have been holding our own in-school spelling bees for many years and have participated in numerous regional spelling bees, Amelia is the first KES student to win the regional title and be headed to “Bee Week” in Washington!
