(Conrad) Rowe, Janet Mary

Passed away September 4, 2019
Age 86, of Dartmouth passed away September 4, 2019 in the VG Site, QEII in Halifax. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, she was a daughter of George Roland (of LaHave), and Maria Luisa (Fabregas) Conrad (of Ponce, Puerto Rico). Janet was a proud graduate of the Roedean School in England, Kings-Edgehill School in Windsor, and Dalhousie University. After earning a chemistry degree, Janet and her husband Jack spent many years working abroad, during which they established their family of whom they were extremely proud. They eventually settled back in Canada, initially in Montreal, but planted roots in Dartmouth where they lived, worked and volunteered for many years while raising their family. Janet later went on to earn a gerontology degree, which eventually brought her to a Senior Management position at Oakwood Terrace in Dartmouth. Janet spent many years alongside her husband volunteering for the Halifax Highland Games Committee, taking great pride in the fact that people could use the "facilities" because she had re-stocked the toilet paper and kept them tidy. She was always devoted to working with the elderly, and spent many years volunteering as a palliative care companion. She spent a decade at her late husband's side as his primary caregiver. While advocating for dementia/Alzheimer's, she volunteered her time and skills to many organizations, including providing therapeutic touch at various oncology and palliative wards throughout the H.R.M. Janet is remembered as a "Rock" of Cranston Avenue, often helping with neighbourhood functions, whether it be throwing a great New Year's party or looking out for the Cranston kids skating on Oat Hill Lake. Later in life, Janet found humour in the reaction on younger faces when they saw what she was physically capable of - not only a lifelong yoga practitioner, but well into her 80's Janet regularly walked the 14 flights of stairs down (and up!) in her condo building. During re-construction of the Dartmouth SportsPlex, despite some hesitation, she joined Goodlife Fitness at the age of 84. She loved it, and inspired quite a few regular gym-goers! Janet understood the importance of not only keeping the brain sharp but the body sharp as well; perhaps related to her reign as a Lunenburg "Queen of the Seas" in her youth. Janet believed in working hard but making the most of every moment. She enjoyed gardening, family, entertaining, history, art, music, healthy debates, and, of course, the many family pets "fuzzy butts" that came and went throughout her life. We fondly remember her quote "Things don't own me, I own them" - her children's and grandchildren's "accidents" benefitted from this mantra many times throughout the years. There is a hole in our hearts, however as Janet/Darling/Mom/"The Lady"/Nanna believed, there are Energies. Janet's will always be with us. "Y se mantenía con el corazón". (And it remained with the heart.)Janet is survived by her sons, Paul (Darlene) of Dartmouth; and John (Kirsten) of Hamilton, Ont.; grandchildren, Justin and Erica of Dartmouth; Drew of Hamilton; and niece, Moira MacDonald of Toronto. Predeceased by husband, John "Jack" Francis Rowe; sister, Nellie Josephine (Conrad) MacDonald; and daughter, Emily Anne (Rowe) Peters. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bide-Awhile Animal Shelter in Dartmouth, or Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
