Long Beach Poly Picks up win over KES Prep

KES Girls Prep dropped a 57-30 decision to Long Beach Poly(California) in the first game of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix, Arizona on Wednesday December 19th, 2018.

Long Beach Poly has a school enrollment of over 4700 students, but the teams were actually quite evenly matched. The long travel day the day before combined with a late night at the tournament opening dinner may have caught up a bit with the KES team as some mental mistakes prohibited the Canadians from gaining any offensive traction in the game. Aggressive play by Claire Englehutt, who led the game in blocked shots, including an incredible sequence of blocking two LBP players on consecutive shots, kept the Windsor NS school in the game, and 2019 Savannah Provo in her first game back from injury provided early offense for KES. LBP ran a patient offense as the tournament is not using a shot clock and they were able to eventually find gaps in the KES zone after the girls played hard defense for an extended period of time, much longer than what they are used to, which led to some easy scores. LBP pulled away to a 14 point lead in the first half, and duplicated the output in the second half, to end the game with the 27 point spread.

The conversation between the Head Coaches at the conclusion of the game offered best wishes on each teams road for the rest of the tournament and the season. The Head Coach of LBP expressed that he was very impressed with the KES team, especially since they played hard until the final buzzer, no matter what the score was. The KES Girls should now know that no matter who we play, they can compete with them on any court.  Coming from our small corner of Canada, sometimes, that is a mental hurdle that young athletes, and young people in general have to cross. So many things going on at KES are truly in the class with the best in North America, and world wide.

The Nike Tournament of Champions continues for the KES Girls Prep Team on Thursday with a morning game 10:00am Mountain / 1:00pm Atlantic vs Normal Community High School from Illinois (located between Chicago and Springfield, enrollment 2050 approx).
