An Out of This World Experience

Rowan Francis, one of our Grade 6 students from Canning, Nova Scotia, has quite an exciting summer planned.  In a recent news release, it was announced that Rowan and 51 other students from across Canada have been chosen to take part in the Canadian Space Agency’s Junior Astronaut Camp. The Junior Astronauts initiative was first announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in February 2019. To quote the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, “…The Junior Astronaut Camp will inspire and empower the next generation of scientists, engineers and astronauts – and encourage them to consider all the opportunities offered in space exploration and STEM careers.” Rowan will be one of only seven Grade 6 students to take part in the national camp.  He will meet other Canadian space enthusiasts from Grades 6 to 9 and, together, they will have an opportunity to interact virtually with astronauts, engineers, and scientists from the CSA.  The programme runs from July 26th to 30th and is full of fun and engaging activities including: “operating a rover during a simulated Moon mission, using satellite imagery to solve Earth problems, and working out with astronauts and space fitness experts.

Rowan is a perfect choice for this camp.  His well-researched Science Fair project on space exploration and life on Mars highlights his curiosity and interest in all things galactic.  He will be a wonderful KES representative, and I am eager to hear all about his virtual space camp experiences.  Congratulations, Rowan; we are all proud of you!
