Highlanders Open the Season with Strong Swims at Dalhousie  - Issue 8

The KES Highlanders swim team enjoyed a productive weekend at Dalplex on October 17–18, competing in Saturday’s Dal Relay Meet and Sunday’s Dalhousie Tiger Sprint Meet. The two meets offered opportunities to race together, establish benchmarks and put early-season training into practice.

Saturday’s program featured nine KES relay teams across freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and medley events. With swimmers of different ages contributing to the same teams, the afternoon brought a strong team focus to an often individual sport.

On Sunday, 11 Highlanders recorded 29 legal finishes across the sprint program. Of the 21 swims with entry times available for comparison, 16 were faster than their seed times – a fantastic start to the season.

Harvey ’27 led the results, winning both the boys’ 100 m individual medley in 57.93 and the 50 m freestyle in 23.61. His individual medley time currently ranks eighth in Canada across all ages and was just 0.4 seconds off the open (all ages) provincial record.

Elaura ’32 had an amazing meet as she improved in all three of her events—the 100 m individual medley, 50 m breaststroke and 50 m freestyle – including an impressive seven-second drop in the individual medley.

Rookie Farrah ’30 is off to a fantastic start, swimming personal bests in the 100 m individual medley, 50 m butterfly and 50 m breaststroke. Jude ’32 also had a stellar opening as he recorded personal bests in the 50 m freestyle, 50 m backstroke and 100 m individual medley.

Ethan ’31, Miguel ’28 and Laura J ’30 established race benchmarks in events entered without seed times. Laura N ’30 competed in both backstroke and freestyle, following her relay swims the previous evening.

The weekend gives the Highlanders a useful starting point for the season ahead, with encouraging improvements and clear opportunities to keep developing their starts, turns, technique and race skills. A handful of our swimming stars will compete this weekend in Greenwood before the whole team takes to the pool on November 14–15 at Université Sainte-Anne.
