Girls Win Third Place Game and Earn Berth to Provincials
With the final direct entry to the Provincial Championships on the line, our girls were focused and ready to go. Facing the well-coached Shelburne Rebels team, who we had lost to by 8 points just a week earlier, we knew that we'd be in for a battle.
In an attempt to reverse our fortunes from the last time we played, we employed a different defensive tactic, and our girls responded very well. With the game tied at 21 at half-time, it was clearly anyone's game to win. As the game wore on, our girls continued to play with an intensity that could not be matched by our opponent. Loose balls were ours, we gave them no easy baskets, and we rebounded with passion.
While our starting five played very well, the difference in the game was the play of our bench. In particular, grade 10 sparkplug Lara Kretzinger and senior volleyball standout Astra Joyce were phenomenal. Lara pressured the ball with fierocity and shot the ball extremely well finishing with 10 points, while Astra owned the paint down low with her strong defensive play, rebounding, and even finished with a season high 6 points.
With the win the girls earn the right to represent KES at the Provincial Championships held at Dalbrae Academy in Mabou, Cape Breton from March 5-7th. The girls will look to improve on their fourth place finish a year ago.
