John Grant Memorial Cup at Dalhousie University

This past weekend, two King’s-Edgehill debate teams competed in the John Grant Memorial Cup at Dalhousie University. The tournament is a rigorous two days of debate with motions centered on resolutions that apply to the United Nations. Motions included: This House Promotes (THP) work-sharing over layoffs, when firms seek to reduce production, This House (TH), as the EU, would put forward a joint bid for the summer Olympic games, and This House Regrets (THR) businesses taking stances on social issues. This and many other motions were debated in the senior and junior categories stretching students' use of logic and argumentation.

 

Sokha Ebert ‘30 and Ruari Ryan ‘29 did an incredible job confidently debating their position against some of the best debaters in the province who are two to three years their senior while Jack Michalak ‘25 and Ezra Choo ‘26 represented well in the senior division.

 

With a reinvigorated debate program spanning over 10 years, one of the many pleasures of engaging in debate competitions in the province is running into King’s-Edgehill alumni who have continued to follow their passion into their university years. This weekend we were able to spend time with Maeve Hurley ‘23 who is a member of the Sodales Debate Society at Dalhousie University and had a role in the coordination of this weekend's tournament.

 

This coming weekend three of the School's top teams will be heading to junior provincials hosted by Halifax Grammar School with the hopes of earning a spot at nationals later this year. We wish Julien Gingras ‘27, Max Proctor ‘27, Sokha Ebert ‘30, Altyn Hood ‘29,  Ruari Ryan 29’, and Alethea Cheng ‘29 the best of luck!
