Harvest House Volunteering

It has been three years since our community outreach program at Harvest House, the soup kitchen in Windsor, has been operational. The pandemic put our volunteering efforts on hold since 2019. It was wonderful, therefore, to fill our vans once again with teams of volunteers on Tuesday during Junior lunch to help those in need in our community. Although COVID-19 protocols still prevent the patrons from sitting down to a hot lunch, our student volunteers can assemble hot take-out bagged lunches that are delivered to those in need. The students eat on the run so they will be able to devote their lunch hour to serving those less fortunate in the community and be back on campus for their afternoon classes. Whether it is homemade stew or spaghetti on the menu, our students are quick to serve up the main course and add rolls, cookies, yogurt cups, or whatever else is ready for take-out. Many hands make light work, and the Harvest House staff appreciate the students’ smiles and efficient work.

Willoughby Larder ‘29 summed it up nicely this Tuesday when she said, “This is a great way to volunteer. We provide hot meals for those in need, earn volunteering hours over lunch, and have fun doing it!” It is amazing how much you can pack into one day on campus.
