Artist Spotlight – Dakota Bagshaw ‘22

Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born and raised in Ontario, and I decided to move to a different province for my Grade 12 year and become a part of the KES community. I’m very hardworking and have big dreams and goals when it comes to the future. I’m very much a Disney kid and believe that magic is everywhere.

What is your preferred artistic medium?
Over my years of being involved in music, there have been many different kinds of mediums. I’ve been involved in the performing arts through many theatre productions over the years like School of Rock, but I prefer playing my instruments which are flute and alto saxophone.

How long have you been performing?
I’ve been performing since I was a little kid – singing and being in musicals, then over the years started getting more interested in playing musical instruments. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember, but I’ve been playing flute for ten years and alto saxophone for three years now.

What is your favourite part of making music?
My favourite thing is being able to work on different pieces spanning many genres and seeing them come to life through my instruments. By taking all that hard work and being able to perform on stage with people as part of an ensemble or singing as a choir or in a symphonic band. I also enjoy writing my own lyrics – it feels like my own kind of journal and I’m able to express myself by singing my own songs.

Who are some of your favourite artists?
There are many different artists I enjoy like Carrie Underwood, Sugarland, Alan Jackson, Billy Currington, Luke Combs, Lady A, and Zac Brown Band. I also enjoy playing pieces from artists like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancook, Frank Sinatra, and Geoff Zanelli.
