Honouring Girls Prep Hockey’s Remarkable Seniors

A packed and boisterous West Hants arena served as a perfect setting as we said an emotional goodbye to our five amazing graduating players. The atmosphere was electric from the introduction of the starting line up and play of O Canada until the final whistle and, as has been the case for their entire careers, our seniors did not disappoint.

How fitting that our captain Abby McCarthy ‘22, who was on a different level all night, scored our first goal. Goalie Sophie Thomas ‘22, as she has done all season, came out of nowhere to make a highlight reel save in the second period that changed the flow of the game. Sarah Hardy’s ‘22 tenacity and effort forced turnovers all game and created multiple scoring opportunities for her linemates while Josie King ‘22 used her speed and finesse to score yet another crucial goal for our team. And Jaelyn Keiver ‘22, as she always does, controlled the flow of the game – doing all the little things that make hockey teams win but too rarely get recognized.

For a combined 15 years, these five graduates have represented the School and our girls prep hockey programme with pride and class.

Sophie Thomas – Playing hockey’s most important position, goalie, Sophie’s spectacular play, hard work and focus on the ice, combined with her boisterous and fun personality off the ice, made her a critical addition to our programme this season.

Josie King – Josie ended her three-year KES hockey career in style after a dominant season. We will all miss her laughs, her bizarre taste in music, her energy, and her spirit as she leaves us to play at StFX next season.

Sarah Hardy – Sarah has been part of the programme for the past four seasons. Her work ethic both on and off the ice is remarkable. She is a passionate and intense competitor who does everything at full speed.  The example that she sets for her younger teammates every game is impressive and will be missed.

Jaelyn Keiver – Jaelyn’s humility and humour has both entertained us all season long and served as that calming presence every successful team needs. A true friend to everyone with a heart that fills the rink, Jaelyn will play next year in the United States at Williams College.

Abby McCarthy – Abby has spent the past four seasons with the King’s-Edgehill girls prep team. Our captain and undisputed leader, Abby approaches each game with one singular and unselfish focus and that is to do whatever it takes to will her team to victory. Talented, tough, courageous – Abby has led our team to victory in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Ontario, and Maine this season and to the top of the North American prep league for the first time ever! Words will never do justice to her impact on our hockey programme.

From the bottom of my heart, I say a huge thank you to these remarkable girls. I have every confidence that you will all do big things in life!
