The 254 Springs Out of Winter

April has come upon us, the sunny days are once again becoming more frequent, and the 254 is back in action! This past week, the corps did some drill to wear off the rust of winter. Within minutes, we were back in unison, the timings were together, and the drill was back in sync. This week we decided to go off the beaten path, so to speak. We took a break from method of instruction and staged an exercise designed to challenge the leadership skills of the entire corps. Tasks were handed out varying from airstrip construction to land a couple of fictional Cessnas to crop zone layout to accept a company of fictional paratroopers. Another crew laid out parking lots while other platoons were involved in formulating the routine for Day 1 at the School and the construction of an outdoor classroom.

The highlight of the afternoon was the drill demonstration put together by the Grades 6 and 7 cadets. Employing drill purpose rifles, our cadets were tasked with inventing a drill routine using movements that did not exist in the Canadian Army Drill Manual. With a little bit of imagination and the help of a couple of senior cadets, Sergeant Major Gabby Strickey ’22 (head girl) and CQMS Warrant Officer Lucy Goddard ’23, the routines were fantastic. I have never seen rifle gymnastics performed or the word of command ‘sashay’ used on a parade square. It worked though. Perhaps I should step back and have these junior cadets teach the drill.

Spring sunshine, a dry turf field and motivated cadets. What a great day to be a cadet in the 254!
