Artist Spotlight – Evey Kennedy ‘23

Students who receive an Artist of the Week award are invited to participate in our Artist Spotlight profiles to further highlight the accomplishments of those engaged in the arts at our School.

This month, we are pleased to be featuring Grade 11 student Evey Kennedy.

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Evey Kennedy, and I was born and raised in Hammonds Plains, Nova Scotia. I love to dance, ski, travel, and hike to new places.

What is your preferred artistic medium?
I definitely love to perform and that's why I love dancing so much, but when no one is watching I also love to sing.

How long have you been dancing for?
I've been dancing since the age of five when I started Irish dancing. After that I switched to hip hop and before I knew it I was involved in all styles – ballet, contemporary, jazz, hip hop, tap, and competing under the spotlight every year.

What is your favourite part of dancing?
My favourite part about dancing is how relieving it is to just dance like no one's watching. After a hard day I love going to the dance studio and forgetting about all that's going on and just dance.

What is your favourite style of dance?
My favourite style of dance is contemporary because there is such a spectrum of emotions you can express, not only
through your movements, but also by your facials to tell a story to the audience.

What are you doing when you're not dancing?
When I'm not dancing, you can find me researching new places to hike and travel, shopping, or doing homework. I also find joy in finding new recipes for baking in the kitchen.

What advice do you have for aspiring dancers?
Persistence is key. You're never going to get a move perfect the first time. Keep trying and have a positive mindset because in no time, you'll have it mastered!

"I have no desire to prove anything by dancing... I just dance."
