Athletes of the Week

“Athletes of the Week” (AOW) are selected based on athletic performance and sportsmanship. Positive sporting behaviour is valued at KES and integral to our athletic philosophy and School mission statement emphasizing gentleness and learning and dignity and respect. These student athletes also reflect the seven principles of “true sport”.

 

Junior Boy – Yasu Hojo ‘25 took his skills to Florida with our prep boys baseball team over the March break. Along with juniors Drew Zettler ‘25 and Kail Brown ‘25, he represented our School with talent and sportsmanship. Yasu pitched five solid innings versus a top team from New York. He recorded 15 outs against a talented 17-year-old squad. He is also a solid hitter and excellent fielder. Not bad for a 14-year-old! Way to go Yasu!

Junior Girl – Sierra Phillips ‘25 dominated both the offensive and defensive boards and was lead scorer on March 7, as the KES Junior girls basketball team hosted a bigger and more experienced Middleton team in our final game of the season. Natalia Shaw ‘27 was the glue that held us together, keeping the team and game play calm and controlled despite high intensity pressure. Ali MacLean ‘27 and Maanvi Manchineni’s ‘27 speed, hustle, and aggressiveness made it extremely difficult for the strong Middleton team to score. Finally, Bristol Quinn ‘27 was our shining star in this game, a girl who never touched a basketball until this season and had no prior game experience, never gave up, played nearly the entire game and still had a smile on her face after being pushed around by bigger more experienced players for most of the game. Well done and congratulations to Sierra!

Senior Girls – Megan Mattie ‘22 - After a long wrestling season, characterized by a dedication to balancing her various responsibilities around the School, Megan had an excellent performance at the Senior Sport Nova Scotia (SSNS) wrestling provincial tournament here at King's-Edgehill. Megan's first-place finish was so dominant that she single-handedly gave KES a second-place team finish despite being the only senior female wrestler to represent us on the mat. This was a great finish to a distinguished high school wrestling career, and a natural springboard to further success on the rugby pitch. Great work, Megan!

Senior Boy – Stanislav Matkovskyi ’22 had an excellent finish to a stellar final wrestling season. He led his numerically small senior boys team to a second-place finish at the provincial championships, held here on March 5. He finished first place individually after several highly technical, dominant performances, characterized by spectacular throws. It was a fitting finish for such a hard-working, cerebral wrestler. Great work, Stan on winning your sleeves and a provincial high school championship!
